Homeless Veteran Initiative of Veterans for Peace Milwaukee
We at Veterans for Peace believe that no veteran having sacrificed
unselfishly to serve his country should have to live homeless on the
streets of America. Starting the Homeless Veteran Initiative several
years ago we have searched the parks, under bridges, abandoned buildings
and the streets of Milwaukee looking for veterans. With the help of our
homeless programs and the veterans determination to succeed themselves,
many are now off the street and can hold their head up as productive
citizens in their communities.
Programs of the HVI
- Housing First Program The first step in the path back into society is safe and secure housing. Having the burden of finding shelter every night lifted from you can go a long way in stabilizing your life. Renting single family homes of two and three bedrooms we place one veteran per bedroom which has an almost immediate effect of building self esteem. Then begins the process of filing claims, looking for employment or what ever the individual needs to put their life back together. Housing First details
- Food Program Starting as a program to supply food to veterans in our housing, the Food Program now provides food to over 90 veterans and veterans family's who have have their own apartments and rooms but with limited income can use help with the weekly groceries. Food Program Details
- Homelessness Prevention Many of the veterans who now receive a small monthly income from disability claims or pensions that were filed and approved have moved into their own rooms and apartments. Living on a small fixed income is not easy for anyone, and as the veterans are ready and move into their own places, Veterans for Peace helps by providing furniture and household items to relieve some of the financial burden of living on their own. - Outreach Once a week, Veterans for Peace, conducts an early morning search of the overnight sleeping spots of the homeless looking for veterans. The team seeks out and contacts homeless veterans at temporary camps which may be located in more isolated areas of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and some sites literally under the feet of the people of Milwaukee. 2009 Point in Time Survey
Taken every two years in Milwaukee by the Milwaukee Continuum of Care, this survey is a snapshot of data of the homeless in Milwaukee. Participation from 41 organizations and 70 volunteer interviewers from emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, meal programs, homeless service providers, street outreach and churches make it possible. The 2009 Point in Time Survey counted a total of 1,660 adults and children who were homeless on the
night of January 28, 2009, including 965 adults and 349 children counted directly by the Point in Time and an additional 346 adults and children reported by the Rescue Mission. Of the 965 adults counted by the Point in Time, 919 were directly interviewed by Point in Time volunteers. This report presents
the results of these interviews.
